Winter blues!

Author: Ian 11/11/2010

As the nights draw in, the temperature drops and the curtains get drawn. The mood in the house changes from summer fun to winter blues.

It’s seem that all my girls want to do is curl up and hibernate till the light night, even with the offer of hot water bottles and blankets their noes and toes still get cold.

As we go out in the dark and come home in the dark, we look at friends on the far side of the planet BBQ on the beach and wonder why?

But they don’t have snow!

According to a study in medical journal Gut, bowel cancer can be prevented with a daily dosage (75mg) of aspirin. Apparently you will receive greater benefits the longer you do this as well.
Volunteers who took part in the study were asked to take one 75mg – lower than the recommended dose for a child – dose of aspirin a day and saw their chances of getting the disease reduced by 30%.
The cancer itself affects 38,500 people in the UK each year so these results could help a significant amount of people.
Aspirin has also been linked with reducing the risk of dementia, pregnancy-related condition pre-eclampsia, breast cancer and heart attacks.

Despite this, aspirin does come with some health warnings. Just a small amount of aspirin can cause such side effects as dizziness, internal bleeding and stomach irritation. People with high blood pressure can also be at risk because it can increase the chance of a stroke caused by bleeding into the brain.

So, best to check with your doctor first!

Nuts also contain plant sterols, a compound regularly added to margarines to reduce cholesterol absorption.
Experts in the UK have suggested that nuts can play an important part of a healthy diet but have also advised not to eat nuts that are covered in sugar or salt.
Certain types of nuts have other benefit for other such as;

Nasal spray to help with shyness

Author: Ian 09/24/2010

If you’re a shy person or someone who is uncomfortable in social situations fear not, help is at hand. Scientists have developed a nasal spray to help overcome these feelings.
The spray contains the hormone oxytocin (a love hormone) which is known to increase empathy and bonding as it is given to mothers to help them bond with their new born babies.
US and Israeli scientists conducted a test of 27 healthy adult men, giving them the hormone or a placebo via a nasal spray and then asking them to perform an ‘empathic accuracy task’ – which measures their powers of reading the thoughts and feelings of others.
The results could not only help people who suffer with social deficiencies but also with conditions such as autism.

A recent study conducted by Cardiff University, between 200 and 2007 backs a call for the introduction of Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL). Data analysis for the research was carried out to estimate the number of lives that could be saved.
Under the proposed policy newly qualified drivers aged between 17 & 24 will be banned from driving at night and from carrying passengers of a similar age, for up to two years. Similar schemes are already operated in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and parts of the USA.
The researches have claimed that such a policy could save 200 lives and result in 1,700 fewer injuries. Research also suggests that one in five new drivers crashes within their first six months on the road. The Cardiff team says that by targeting them with graduated driver licensing, many accidents might be avoided.
The research will be presented at the World Safety Conference, which will hear from other experts on how road safety could be improved.

Protect the brain with Yoga

Author: Ian 09/02/2010

If you suffer or have suffered with stress or even depression then you should try Yoga.  According to recent study researchers have found that the calming exercise can help relax your mind.
It has been discovered that sessions of Yoga can help boost levels of the amino acid GABA, which is a chemical in the brain that is essential for a relaxed mind. A low level of GABA can be associated with depression and anxiety. However, just three sessions of Yoga a week can help boost the levels of the chemical.
After sessions of Yoga the participants of the study had their brains scanned to measure levels of GABA. The applicants also reported lower levels of anxiety and increases in their mood than walkers.

Author: Ian 05/17/2010

After a long distance run it is important to warm down properly, much like you would warm up before a race. Stretching the muscles is an essential part of warming down otherwise your legs will ache for a while after the run! If you know how to warm up before a race it is pretty much the same to warm down, making sure that all parts of your body are fully stretched. Breathing correctly can also help the circulation in your body and all these elements will contribute to you feeling replenished and ready to run again in no time!

1. Reduce Stimulant Intakes
It could be a good idea to reduce or remove the amount of stimulants you put into your body. This should reduce the amount of sweat you will have to deal with. Stimulants may come in the form of caffeine found in soft drinks, coffee, chocolate and sugar etc.

2. Eat Healthily
Eating the right foods can also help to significantly reduce sweating by calming the sympathetic nerves, which act as stimulants in sweat production. There are many herbs in particular than can help reduce sweating.

3. Wash Your Face
Keeping your face clean is a great way to help prevent facial sweating. Be sure that when your face is washed, you use cold and clean water – otherwise you will get the adverse effect! Dry your face with a clean towel or small dry wash cloth.

4. Reduce Stress
Stress is a large factor in hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Learning yoga and meditation techniques will help your stress levels and body temperature, which will reduce excessive sweating significantly.

5. Have Short Hair
Having shorter hair will allow more air to get to your head. This will allow air flow through your hair and onto your head, which could help to reduce excessive face and head sweating.

Author: Ian 05/05/2010

There are many ways to prevent heart disease. These ways consist of living a healthy lifestyle including a healthy diet and regular exercise. It is often recommended to do 30 minutes exercise at least 3 times a week that works the heart. Keeping the heart pumping faster is an essential part of improving its’ strength which in turn prevents heart disease. Eating healthily is also important as too much fat can block the arteries and this makes the heart struggle. So there has to be a balance between eating right and exercising regularly.
