Author: Ian 04/09/2010

There are many tips and tricks that people advise for curing a common cold. The best thing to do really is get plenty of sleep and rest. If you still don’t feel good it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, water is best and take a recommended dose of paracetamol. At night time you can take something like Night Nurse which basically knocks you out for the night, helps you sleep better, breathe more easily and generally feel better the next day. There are many other things that help cure a cold but take it from me, Night Nurse does the trick every time.

Free Text

Free texts are always a must when it comes to medicine. That is such a strange statement but I learned recently that certain hospitals around the country are giving families or patients free texts when they buy other products in the hospital.

Lets say your in the hospital for long term care and you are stuck in a bed, well as your probably aware that you can hire a phone on a wheelie table that plugs in next to your bed to stop any problems that machinery gets with any signals coming from mobile phones.

Then you have to buy credit to use the phone and they normally give you a code to type in to access a line, the thing is now the phones have now developed that much, they now have the capability to send a texts either through the hand set or the base unit. Most phone companies will give you a good deal on the amount of lines you take with them and as most hospitals have so many rooms they will get lots and lots of good offers and freebies like a free text here or there.

Have you tried the service, and what did you think?

There is a certain generation of people who refuse to play the game of squash because they’re afraid that they’ll snap the racket against the wall while playing a shot and then somehow drive it through their own neck.

This seems a strange fear for many different people to collectively hold. It’s a pretty unlikely turn of events after all. So why is this?

The answer – as it so often is – is an episode of Casualty. For such a shit programme that nobody watched, it’s had an amazing impact on the irrational fears of the nation.

Everybody remembers the snapped squash racket through the neck episode.

Continuing our theme of sporting ailments, let’s deal with ‘getting hit in the face by a cricket ball’.

Those who have never played cricket will be unaware of the severity of this sporting injury. Those who have played will be wincing. Cricket balls are close cousins of rocks.

My dad got hit in the face while playing cricket. He was wicketkeeping at the time and he says it was only a spinner bowlign, so it wasn’t even that fast.

He had to have the bone removed, so now, while his nose looks completely normal, it can actually be pressed flat against his face.

First port of call

In the event of a potential health emergency most of us would consider going to accident and emergency (A&E) at our nearest hospital. But that’s just the point. A&E is for just that.

If your not bleeding to death and your demise is not imminent what should you do? Well the National Health Service (NHS) have put our hard earned tax pounds to good use and have set up the service NHS Direct. You can speak to a health professional who will access your condition and advice you on what to do next with regards to treatment, if at all is necessary.

Their number is 0845 46 47. You may also find useful information on their website: http://www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk/

Body types.

There are many different body types and these days most are out of shape. But underneath all the body excess and clothing our bodies all fit into one of three categories.

The three main types:

ectomorphs – slight build
mesomorphs – muscular
endomorphs – excess bodyweight

The basic body type you may be is greatly outside of our control and much more due to your DNA and our childhood lifestyles than anything else. We are pretty much how we are however we can fine tune ourselves and make adjustments.
To make any changes to your body shape the basic groundwork is the same.
Watch what you eat and choose fresh, low fat and healthy foods
Avoid consuming large amounts of toxins such as alcohol and caffeine
Undertake regular exercise which should include elements of cardio, strength training and flexibility.

Dead legs

Yesterday I played football strangely enough for the police force as I have a friend who is a police man and they were short of one or two good players, so he drafted me in for the day, we played at least 6 matches and got knocked out in the quarter finals, half way through the tournament I got clattered on my thigh and my leg went numb but adrenaline and football got me through the pain, the problem is today I have woken with a dead leg which makes me feel like my thigh bone has snapped and I have got to go and play football again today for 2 hours but I’m hoping the adrenaline will take me through it again.
