Nuts lower cholesterol
Author: IanIt’s time to give squirrels a run for their nuts as it’s been proved that regularly eating nuts can help lower your cholesterol level. Recent studies in the US have shown that eating a small bag (average of 67g) of nuts a day, specifically almonds, pecans and macadamias, can help reduce cholesterol levels by 7%.
Although high in calories, nuts contain plaenty of nutrients, notably vitamin E, folic acid, copper, magnesium and the amino acid arginine, each of which may help play a role in preventing heart disease. Nuts also contain plant sterols, a compound regularly added to margarines to reduce cholesterol absorption.
Experts in the UK have suggested that nuts can play an important part of a healthy diet but have also advised not to eat nuts that are covered in sugar or salt.
